Mrs. Miller's second grade class used a cartoon creator to help them learn about expository non-fiction text. Using cartoons increases student engagement and enhances communicative and linguistic competencies.
The students read a non-fiction book about birds and looked for several interesting facts. They recorded their facts and then created a cartoon to represent their chosen facts. They selected a three pane cartoon format and added a bird character and backgrounds. They used "voice bubbles" to have the bird characters tell about themselves!
